Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The most basic of technology has  helped me in constructing all of my media work and I wouldn't have been able to complete it without the use of these below...

My external hard drive

As I had to complete some work away from college I had to find a way to transport my work safely. To do this I found that the most efficient way would be to use an external hard drive on which all my work can be stored. Using this hard drive means that all of my work can be kept together making it easy to use different computers to complete my coursework, rather than being restricted to one computer.

Folders for organisation

Using folders allowed me to keep my work organised, making it quick and easy for me to locate my work. Without folders all of my work would be much more difficult to find and this could become very time consuming.

Simply a computer, laptop or MAC

Without the above it would be impossible to complete any work. The programmes on each have allowed me to not only create my media products but to display my research, construction, planning and evaluation too. It has been an advantage for me to have the opportunity to use both a MAC and a PC/laptop as these both contain different programmes which are unique to the computer (for example, Final Cut Pro can only be used on a MAC).

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 had undoubtedly been the most crucial technology used in every process of creating my media products. It has been my primary source of information and has allowed me to carry out any of my research such as - searching for images -looking for information - searching for fonts - music/sound effects -emailing teachers - blogger etc. and it has effectively allowed me to create such effective products as an outcome. The web has also been one of my main forms of contact as I set filming dates etc. with my actresses through email. Finally it has also been useful in helping me contact my teachers for feedback, allowing me to quickly and easily communicate with them from home.

Google or Bing

Google and Bing have been my most useful search engines for finding anything on the internet. They have been most helpful in my research. In regards to research they have allowed me to search for any information that I needed such as finding out the codes and conventions of all my media products. I found Google was a great place to find any images or image effects to help improve the aesthetics of my work (for example the dust and scratches effect on my images). Without these search engines it would have been much more time consuming for me to be able to source any information or images that I needed.
College emails and website

On the college website I have been able to keep up to day with all the deadlines to make sure that I met them. I have also been able to locate checklists to ensure I didn’t forget to include any work on my blog.
Youtube

On YouTube I have been able to search for any sound effects that I was looking to use. I also used it when searching for existing horror film trailers and this came in very useful as it brought up a huge selection for me to look at. It allowed me to study many so that I could identify the codes and conventions typical or the horror genre.
YouTube has been the website in which I have been able to upload my film trailer drafts and my audience feedback video to. Using YouTube has allowed a quick and simple upload of the videos I have produced onto my blog with little ease.
Blogger

Blogger has been the place where I have stored any work I have done during my media course for both my AS and A” years studding media. It has allowed me to easily order my work in a way which is simple to understand and it has also given me the opportunity to go back to any work to improve upon it. On blogger it is easy to see if you are up to date with your blog as it allows you to look at other pupils blogs, I found this useful as looking at others work gave me new ideas and inspiration for my own.
Dafont and Myfonts

These websites have thousands of different fronts to choose from and because I wanted my media products to be unique from my other class mates I chose to use fonts off these sights, rather than the slightly boring ones from word or Photoshop. They allowed me to search words such as ‘horror’ and ‘spooky’ to allows me to easily find a suitable font for my project.
Microsoft
Microsoft office contains many useful programmes in which I have been able to use during the presentation of my work on my blog.
Word

Word has come in handy when writing up my LIIAR and textual analysis of existing media products. This is the programme on which I created my questionnaire for my audience feedback as Word makes it quick, easy and simple to do, allowing me to change text size and colour easily. Before I posted any written up work onto blogger I ALWAYS made sure I copied it into word, just in case I made any little spelling mistakes as Word makes it easy to correct them.
Graphs and Microsoft Excel

When displaying my audience feed back I chose to present it in graphs as this visually showed me the outcome of the answers, allowing me to see the amount of different answers easily. Microsoft Excel is the usual programme to open up when creating a graph on a PC however I used a shortcut through Microsoft Word. I used the ‘charts’ button which acted as a shortcut though to Microsoft Excel to create my charts. Doing it this way however allowed me to insert my graph straight onto word with my text so that no fiddly copying and pasting has to be carried out. This method is also less time consuming.

Powerpoint

PowerPoint is my favourite Microsoft programme to work on as it allows easy movement or text and images on multiple slides at one time. It also allows you to set a theme amongst your slides so that your work looks professionally displayed. I chose to use PowerPoint to construct question 1 in this evaluation as I wanted to include many screen grabs of my film trailer.

Adobe Programmes

Photoshop is the programme on which I feel I have the most skills and I feel it has helped me to make my poster and magazine cover very professional. Photoshop allows for easy editing or text and photos in a way which no Microsoft programme will let you edit. All the editing for the images on my poster and magazine was done on Photoshop as I feel I can work this programme well.

As you can see my image for my poster isn't very effective (scary) with out any of the adjustments I made on it and I have done this by using the adjustment options in Photoshop.

Adjusting the levels and curves on my images allowed me to adjust the lightness or the image, allowing for a more professional looking photograph.

Adding a dark black background allowed me to achieve the conventional dark and eerie look of existing horror film posters. This is also the same kind of effect I used from my magazine cover.

Adding a dust and scratches effect with a red coloured gradience over the top allowed me to create this spooky looking image. You can see from the origional image to this one that editing is very important in creating successful media products.
Bridge

Bridge came in useful when sorting through images that I had taken for my media products. It allowed me to easily look at the thumbnails of the photos taken on photo shoots so that I could see which ones wanted to edit further.
On the MAC - Final Cut Pro

Final cut pro is where I produced my film trailer and two teaser trailers. Final cut pro is a programme that allows you to import footage and edit them to how you want them. I found this programme very useful as it allowed me to add effects onto my footage that made it look like it was filmed in the night time. It also allowed me to create quick fast cut edits within my trailers as this is typical of the horror gentle. It regards to music this was very simple to add too, as it just needed to be simply imported onto the programme. Without Final Cut Pro I wouldn’t have been able to produce my trailer at all, and so I feel it has been a very useful media technology within the production of my media products.

Camera

My Sony alpha camera has allowed me to capture quality images for both my magazine and my poster. Without my camera I wouldn’t have been able to capture still images for my media products so this was an essential piece of equipment.

Camcorder

My camcorder similar to the one shown above allowed me to capture all of my moving image for my horror trailer.

Memory card

Using a memory card in both my camera and camcorder that had a big storage was essential in ensuring I had enough space to film/shoot as much footage as I needed without running out of space.
Tripod

Using a tripod was essential when wanting to capture steady footage with my camcorder. When using the tripod it makes sure that no knocks are seen and can allow for professional looking footage. I only used a tripod for some footage in my trailer as I wanted it use a more conventional hand held camera technique which creates more uneven and jerky movements.

In the making creating and construction of all of my media products there have been many media products that have been used by myself. Without the use of all of these I believe that my final products will not have been as successful and professional looking. Each media product was unique in its own way which allowed me to do different things with my different media products. PowerPoint I feel was the most effecting in the making of my poster and magazine cover however I feel that Final Cut Pro was the most important in making my film trailer and teaser trailers. Overall without all of these different media technologies I would not have been able to complete my media work to a high standard.
